Understanding Inland Ash Scattering: A Modern Funeral Service

A Growing Shift Towards Inland Ash Scattering

As more families in Singapore seek simpler and more nature-centred forms of memorialisation, inland ash scattering has seen a significant rise in demand over recent years.

Opened on 15 August 2025, the new Garden of Serenity (Mandai) is located beside the existing Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium Complex. The facility was introduced to support the growing number of families choosing inland ash scattering as a final farewell option.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), applications for inland ash scattering increased from around 900 in 2021 to more than 2,300 in 2024. The new facility was developed to meet this increasing demand while providing families with an additional peaceful and accessible location for remembrance.

A Growing Shift Towards Inland Ash Scattering

While both facilities serve the same purpose, there are some differences in design, scale, and location.

Garden of Peace

  • Located at the Choa Chu Kang Cemetery Complex
  • Approximately 9,500 square metres
  • An open-concept garden featuring pebble-lined ash scattering lanes separated by trees and shrubs, providing families with privacy and a peaceful environment for remembrance.

Garden of Serenity

  • Located at the new Mandai North Crematorium Complex (MNC)
  • Approximately 750 square metres
  • Inspired by the venation pattern of a leaf, the garden incorporates ash scattering facilities naturally within its meandering pathways. Visitors are surrounded by lush foliage, with butterflies and dragonflies adding to the tranquil and reflective atmosphere.

Due to its smaller size, accumulated “ash soil” from the Garden of Serenity will periodically be transferred to a designated location within the larger Garden of Peace to maintain operational capacity.

Despite these differences, both facilities share similar guidelines and processes:

  • Inland ash scattering sessions are priced at S$320 per session
  • Both facilities are secular spaces
  • Religious ceremonies, burning of joss sticks, playing of music, and food offerings are not permitted
  • Only fresh flowers may be placed on designated racks

Ultimately, the choice between the two locations may come down to personal preference, accessibility, and appointment availability.

The Garden of Serenity is open daily from 9.00am to 5.30pm, except during scheduled maintenance periods.

A Farewell That Feels Meaningful

As memorial preferences continue to evolve in Singapore, the opening of the Garden of Serenity reflects a growing desire for farewells that feel simpler, more personal, and more connected to nature.

For families considering inland ash scattering, the Garden of Serenity offers an additional space where remembrance can take place in a calm and peaceful environment.
